June 2, 1918 - Dora Partcipates in War Effort From Utah

Dora Working in Garden at Castle Gate Utah

 Sunday Evening
June 2nd
Dear Mother and Father,
It has been a wonderful Sunday.  A perfect warm June day, almost the first warm day we have had, has made us smile to see our gardens grow.  Daddy has been home all day until about 4 PM and helped us tighten up the screen door and put the screen on the two high up windows at the side of the house where I  had been waiting for his help.  He had been away nearly three weeks and it did seem so good to have him home. I cracked the last of my butternuts, had half a cup of meats to put into a cake and it is awfully good.  Made some graham bread, not exactly war bread but still not white bread and it makes a little change.  I have to make some white bread because Margaret will not eat the substitute flours very steadily.  Went to Red Cross Friday, could not do much, did not quite finish one bed shirt because I had to jump up and run after Margaret so much, but took down 2 I had done at home and brought back 5 to do this week.  Have a load of fine manure to work into the rows of plants tomorrow and then sprinkle before I begin to wash.  Must get washing done Monday as some of the ladies have threatened to invade our little house either Tuesday or Wednesday and I do not want to be in a wash tub.
Need to do some more sewing for ourselves this week and don’t forget to tell me about the length of your combination so I can do it soon.  This outline will give you an idea as to what we are doing so you can think of us as busy on certain lines.  Every morning between 6 and 7 I sprinkle road and garden, then we have breakfast and are ready for such other work as the day holds. You must not think we are always driven daddy dear but there is really no reason why God’s children should not express activity since the Divine Mind is always active only of course we should strive to distinguish between the unnatural material or physical “bustle” which indicates lack of harmony and the normal activities of a mind growing daily to know more of the harmony of the Divine.
Miss Margaret is in bed all stretched out to grow.  She certainly did enjoy her father’s visit and no more than he did either.  Last night we went for a walk up the valley to where we could get some branches to put among the peas and how proud she was to carry one home and help papa.  It is still the aim of her little life to make every one happy.
Well I must close dears.  Am still waiting for sister’s letter telling us all about it. Will send her the pin with the next bundle.
            Love to each from all.
                                    Dora

O O O O O O O
Can you shut your eyes and feel these warm real ones – a row for each.
[Margaret's own written love and kisses]

Later
There I wasn’t half thru.  Brother sent me a card which came in the same mail as a paper telling of the loss of a transport so I was very grateful for his prompt notice.  I am sure you will hear more often than we so am glad to have you relay news from him.
Mother when I got ready to put up curtains found no screw hooks to put the rods on.  Am sure Mr. H put them in among the things we got that day.  Can you mail them.  Also found a bread knife in the roll.  I’ll just borrow it till I come again.
Now I’m going to splash a bit and go to bed.
